Get prompt help when an injured leg won't hold your weight. An obvious change in the joint's shape also needs attention. New weakness or numbness shouldn't be watched at home. Loss of bladder or bowel control with back soreness is urgent. A red, sore, swollen calf after a procedure may signal a clot. Fever, drainage, or spreading redness may mean an infection. These symptoms need medical care instead of another home test. ## When may a procedure be a poor fit? An active infection needs treatment before any planned, non-urgent joint shot. Bleeding trouble may rule out some choices or require extra care. A joint shot may also need to wait during active cancer care. The cancer doctor should decide if and when it can be considered. Very advanced joint damage may make a shot a poor fit. Major motion loss, soreness at rest, and severe deformity can point toward surgery. Repeated shots may only delay that discussion. A surgeon's opinion can make the choices clearer. ## What will the provider need to know? Tell the doctor or nurse how long your ache has lasted. Name the motion that starts it and what brings you relief. Mention swelling, falls, old injuries, and lost sleep. Bring a written list of every medicine you now take. The exam checks your joint and nearby muscles. The result may support more home care or lead to an X-ray or another doctor's opinion.
